Antibiotic-free salmon farming

Antibiotics have not been used in Faroese salmon farming for more than 20 years. This is closely linked to the strict veterinary regime introduced after serious disease challenges in the industry in the early 2000s. The system places strong emphasis on disease prevention, biosecurity, vaccination, separation of generations, fallowing between production cycles and systematic health monitoring.

This preventive approach has significantly reduced the risk of bacterial disease and the need for antibiotic treatment. Independent international assessments also note that antimicrobials have not been used in Faroese salmon farming since 2003
